Mercedes to make Maybach at Pune plant – The Times of India


PUNE: Mercedes-Benz is do-ubling down on manufacturing in the country and will make three cars in India in a move aimed at blunting the impact of a depreciating rupee. It intends to manufacture GLS Maybach in the country along with an electric vehicle (EV) variant and another combustion engine vehicleIndia will be the only country that will manufacture the GLS Maybach outside the US, Mercedes India MD and CEO Santosh Iyer told TOI. Due to localisation, the vehicle’s price will drop by around Rs 40 lakh to close to Rs 2.75 crore. Iyer declined to comment on the proposed investment at the Chakan plant to drive localisation.Local production or assembly also helps reduce customs duty impact, making cars cheaper as imported the GLS Maybach attracts 110% tariff, which will drop to around 20% when produced locally. In 2025, the company sold 19,007 vehicles with top-end vehicles accounting for 25% of the sales.
